When the Boundaries Dissolve (And New Beginnings Emerge)

The Saturn-Neptune conjunction at 0 degrees Aries marks a rare astrological moment. Explore what it means for your inner world and the parts that need attention.

winter walk nature reflection

This morning I went for a walk with my dog Islay. We went around our familiar neighborhood loop—the one we've been limited to for almost the last month, with our longer trail paths still encased in frozen snow.

As we walked by the opening to the neighborhood trail leading to a park, I noticed the sidewalk was clear.

So we turned in to move towards the park. As we wound along open fields and a small icy pond populated by geese standing on one leg out in the middle, I realized it's been what feels like forever since being surrounded in open space like this.

Closed into the house (which, to be honest, some parts of me could totally do forever—team fuzzy blanket and warm tea for life!). Closed into the same loop of neighborhood. The feeling of my body bracing in preparation for the single-digit temps we've had for so long.

While the big pond in the park was still a milky sheet of ice, the streams that run under the wooden footbridge were in sparkling, bubbling motion.

A bird called in a nearby tree loudly and urgently, over and over. Islay and I both stopped still to listen. I felt the cells of my body unfurl like flowers, opening towards the sound.

Standing in the sun listening to the bird, it felt like new beginnings. Even with forecasts of a new winter storm coming Sunday night, it felt like life and the promise of spring.

The Astrology Poem of This Moment

Part of my daily practice is checking in with the archetypal quality of time through astrology. It can feel a bit like reading a poem about your day or week or month—a naming of elements that you relate to in your own way. And then I get curious about what parts of me might need noticing or connection in relation to these elements.

If you're an astrology follower, yesterday there was major news.

Saturn (associated with structure, boundaries, limitations, restrictions, hardships, lessons, mastery, traditions, the patriarchy...and many more things) met up with Neptune (idealism, dreams, compassion, confusion, illusions, universal love, creativity, fear...and many more things) at the exact same degree: 0 degrees of Aries.

These planets have not met up this way in something like 36 years, and they haven't met up in this exact degree and sign in probably millennia—it's unknown.

0 degrees Aries is called the World Point—the exact beginning of the Zodiac, the place of the Spring Equinox.

So it is a brand new beginning of something during a season of endings (Pisces season—endings, loss, compassion, dreams, universal love).

The Archetypal Dance

The archetypes of Saturn and Neptune together could potentially be experienced in many ways:

Erosion (Neptune) of Boundaries (Saturn)
Dissolving (Neptune) of Leadership or Authority (Saturn)
Dis(Saturn)illusionment (Neptune)
An end (Saturn) to Illusions (Neptune)
Limits (Saturn) to Hope (Neptune)
Building structures (Saturn) of Compassion (Neptune)
Embodying (Saturn) Universal Love (Neptune)
Compassion (Neptune) emerging from hardship (Saturn)
Making Plans (Saturn) from a new creative vision (Neptune)
Bringing your dreams (Neptune) into material form (Saturn)

You might be able to see some of these themes play out in the news. But also, these themes can be prompts for personal reflection and a way to get curious about what parts of you might be present right now and needing your connection.

Questions for Your Inner World

Here are some questions for journaling or reflection if you'd like to use this moment in time to explore your inner world:

  • Are any of these themes present for you in your personal life? You may come up with even more combinations between the two archetypes.

  • Where are you noticing endings alongside beginnings?

  • Do any parts of you feel confused or foggy about what's coming next in your life? (Neptune)

  • Do any parts of you feel like you should be doing something a certain way, you should be doing a better job at things? (Saturn)

  • Are there parts of you holding fears? (Neptune, or Saturn + Neptune together)

  • Are there parts of you that struggle with boundaries or feel invaded by others' emotions or hardships? (Neptune)

  • Where can you create practices (Saturn) around your creativity or compassionate nature (Neptune)?

I was just revisiting Harvard-educated philosopher and historian Richard Tarnas's powerhouse of a book, Cosmos and Psyche, about the historical themes he's observed coming up around different planetary alignments.

On Saturn-Neptune, he remarks that these are "psychologically...demanding times as well as the most likely to call forth genuine nobility of spirit and profundity of vision."

Or to quote Glennon Doyle, as one of my teachers often does regarding Saturn: "We can do hard things."

Especially when fueled by a vision of creativity, love, and compassion.

And when we can notice our parts that are afraid, confused, foggy, critical, demanding—or anything else—and be WITH them, and help them be supported in the way that they need, we have more access to our Self Energy and our inherent creativity, compassion, and courage.

As for me, the astrology poem I noticed unfolding today follows:

Despite remaining and incoming snow and ice—water (Neptune) made solid (Saturn)—a promise of Spring and new beginnings is still here today (0 degrees Aries, the Spring Equinox point).

And I write and send my newsletter on a different day—dissolving (Neptune) of regular structure (Saturn)—and that will be just right for today.

May you notice the streams bubbling beneath the ice. May you hear the call of new beginnings even as winter lingers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Saturn-Neptune conjunction and why does it matter?

The Saturn-Neptune conjunction occurs when these two planets meet at the same degree in the sky. This particular conjunction at 0 degrees Aries (the World Point) is rare—these planets haven't met this way in approximately 36 years, and haven't been at this exact degree and sign in potentially millennia. Astrologically, it represents themes of structure meeting dissolution, dreams meeting reality, and compassion emerging from hardship.

What does 0 degrees Aries represent in astrology?

0 degrees Aries is called the World Point—it's the exact beginning of the Zodiac and marks the Spring Equinox. This degree represents new beginnings, initiation, and the start of a new cycle. When major planetary alignments happen at this degree, they carry themes of significant fresh starts and collective turning points.

How can I work with Saturn-Neptune themes in my personal life?

Notice where you're experiencing endings alongside beginnings. Get curious about parts of you that feel confused, critical, or afraid. Journal on the archetypal combinations (like "building structures of compassion" or "bringing dreams into material form") and see which resonate with your current experience. The key is befriending whatever parts are present rather than trying to fix or change them.

What is Self Energy in Internal Family Systems?

Self Energy is the healing agent within you that emerges when you're not blended with protective or wounded parts. It's characterized by the 8 C's: calm, clarity, curiosity, compassion, confidence, courage, creativity, and connectedness. When you can be WITH your parts (rather than blended with them), you have more access to this innate healing presence.

Do I need to believe in astrology for this to be relevant?

Not at all. You can read the Saturn-Neptune themes as poetry about universal human experiences: the tension between structure and flow, the challenge of maintaining boundaries while staying compassionate, the paradox of endings and beginnings coexisting. The invitation to explore your inner world and befriend your parts applies regardless of your relationship with astrology.
